Intestinal Inflammatory Disease Surgery

Description

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a set of diseases characterized by chronic inflammation of various segments digestive tract diseases , from the mouth to the anus. Among them is Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
The first therapeutic approach must be medical, reserving surgery for complications that occur as a result of the disease (obstructions and perforations), or for not being able to control the disease only with medication.
Intestinal Inflammatory Disease is very complex for this reason in CMED we have a specialized unit in its treatment.

Symptom

The symptoms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease are very varied and range from constipation and diarrhea to weight loss and abdominal pain. However, there are other symptoms that need surgical treatment. This is the case of intestinal obstructions , perforations , abscesses  and perianal fistulas.

Treatment

Surgery for Intestinal Inflammatory Disease depends on the degree and level of involvement (small or large intestine).
In the case of obstructions in the small intestine we perform a stricturoplasty , surgery that consists of increasing the thickness of the intestine in the area affected by the obstruction or narrowing. If the patient presents a perforation , it is necessary to section the affected part and to unite the intestine again in the healthy area.
On the other hand, in cases of severe ulcerative colitis in which the entire large intestine is affected, the surgeryconsists in removing it and joining the small intestine with the rectum and the anus.
